3 OF 4 BELIEVE VIRGIN BIRTH

MSNBC.com (Dec. 5, web exclusive) reports the details of a Newsweek poll that shows some interesting data for this holiday season. The article, "The Christmas Miracle", reports that 79% of Americans believe in the virgin birth of Jesus Christ, just as it is depicted in the Bible!

"...they believe that the entire story of Christmas—the Virgin Birth, the angelic proclamation to the shepherds, the Star of Bethlehem and the Wise Men from the East—is historically accurate."

That's an amazing number; but also amazing is that the poll found "...82 percent believe Jesus Christ was God or the Son of God." Unfortunately, only 52% of the respondents believe Jesus is going to return. That's 30% of those who believe in Jesus as God who do not believe that He's going to return. That means there are 30% of believers in Jesus who need to be taught more accurately on the things of Jesus Christ. Believers have an opportunity to teach that the words of Jesus are authoritative. Because He is the Son of God, more attention to what He said should be given.

What percentage of people believe that no one comes to the Father but through the Son? What percentage believes eternal life comes only through Jesus Christ. What percentage believes that hearing His word is not enough, but obedience to it is necessary for salvation. Jesus said, "He that believes and is baptized (means to be immersed or buried in water) shall be saved..."? The Son of God deserves to be heard and obeyed. We know from Scripture that there are some who believe in Jesus, but they do not do His will. Let's pray for a chance to teach these people the way of God "more accurately."

Details of poll. Princeton Survey Research Associates interviewed by telephone 1,009 adults, aged 18 and older on Dec. 2 and Dec. 3. The margin of error is plus or minus 3 percentage points.
