A CLOSE FRIEND

It feels good to have a close friend: someone you can talk to every day and share all of your favorite experiences with them. With a close friend you feel comfortable being around them even in silence. Through life, we find that friends come and go. Ones that were once so close are long past memories. It might be the one who helped you through the turbulent high school years, or the one you roomed with in college, or maybe it was someone you came to know as a young Christian. But these relationships do not always last. People move with their jobs, families grow, and their interest change. It hurts a little to think about the friends of long ago and wish for old times.

We have a best friend in Jesus. The Bible says that Jesus was a friend to His disciples. He is the friend of us all because He layed down His life for us. "Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends" (Jn. 15:13). Jesus friendship is one you don't want to let get away. Because our friend also happens to be God in the flesh, "we are His friend" if we do what He commands. (John 15:14). He’s there when we need help, when we need advice on decision, when we feel alone, and when we are afraid of the future. Our friend Jesus is also our Savior and God and everyone can have eternal life if they will draw near to Him. No matter how our lives change through the ebb and flow of time, it should never be to the extent that it strains or ends the friendship we have with Christ.

Maybe it's been too long since we talked to our best friends and so we give them a call. They are too important to let get away. Does this describe where we are with Jesus? If so, now is the time to commune with Him in prayer. Take time to meditate on His word and then do it. I don't like the feeling I have when I've been away from my friend for too long. If you need a best friend, won’t you obey Jesus today and put your confidence in Him. Turn away from the sins that condemn us and obey the Gospel of Christ. Repent and be baptized for the remission of your sins and God will give you His spirit and add you to the Church, which is Christ’s body. What a great friend we have in Jesus.
