"India in 2004 posted 19 dowry-related deaths every day. . . ."
The church is sometimes wrongly criticized as being sexist in favor of males. It is true that the Bible lays the burden on men for spiritual leadership in the home and church. But the Scripture does not deny the responsibility of women to teach the truth and confess their faith to others, only that they are not given the responsibility of preaching and teaching the men. Christian men do not lord it over women who have free will and must answer to God with their own obedient faith. The church of Christ values the woman as an equal to the man even if they do have different roles. In Christ there is neither male nor female (Gal. 3:28). God does not value the man more than the woman and neither do Christians. Men are reminded to cherish and sacrifice for their wives and families as Christ loves the church lest their prayers be hindered (See Ephesians 5:25-29; 1 Pt. 3:7).

The attitude of the Christian is like this: "However, in the Lord, neither is woman independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. For as the woman originates from the man, so also the man has his birth through the woman; and all things originate from God." (1 Cor. 11:11,12) A man who understands what this means cannot devalue and mistreat his mother, his wife, his daughter, or his sister in Christ.

Those who have a Christ-like attitude such as this are shocked at the way women are treated around the world in other religions. The following story illustrates this point.
"....Centuries of tradition also demand that couples produce at least one male child to carry on the family name. Many grooms demand dowry well beyond the means of families of their spouse -- demands which often result in the killing of newly-married women. According to the National Crime Records Bureau, India in 2004 posted 19 dowry-related deaths every day but women's organisations say the actual figure is 10 times higher."
Read the shocking story here on how India, which still has the dowry system for marrying a daughter, is having to address the problem of aborting girls who are deemed a liability.

A Christian man would not mistreat his wife if she did not bear him a son. If he did not have a son to carry on his name, so be it. A Christian man is happy if his life be carried on through his daughters' life (even if the last name isn't heard of again). A Christian man would not require that the woman's parents pay him a dowry to marry her. A Christian man could never murder his wife. The news reports indicate that the government in India is trying to bring the killing to a halt, but the system of belief has to change first. Christianity teaches that the woman is highly valued. Indian married men have greater respect for the women in their lives because they themselves have the mind of Christ. The answer to the plight of women around the world is Jesus Christ.
