For thus says the LORD of hosts, 'Once more in a little while, I am going to shake the heavens and the earth, the sea also and the dry land. I will shake all the nations; and they will come with the wealth of all nations, and I will fill this house with glory,' says the LORD of hosts. The silver is Mine and the gold is Mine,' declares the LORD of hosts. The latter glory of this house will be greater than the former,' says the LORD of hosts, 'and in this place I will give peace,' declares the LORD of hosts. - Haggai 2:6-9
In a time of restoration, the prophet spoke yet of the future when God would upset all the earth with His judgment upon the nations. His words apply in a limited sense to Zerubbabel and how God would bless his rule (Haggai 2:23). It was an encouragement to the new governor of Jerusalem to rebuild the temple and restore the worship. But ultimately, the house he would build was not more glorious than Solomon's (Ezra 3:12). The prophet's words applied more fully and completely to the Christian age and to the temple Jesus would build. Only Jesus' house would have greater glory than the house built by Solomon. The physical house/temple that the returnees built in Ezra, Nehemiah, and Haggai's time was smaller and less glorious. The shaking of the heavens and the earth was descriptive of the establishment of a house that would have unparalleled glory. God would not dwell in a physical temple, but He would build a spiritual kingdom of souls with His Son as Ruler. Haggai is predicting when Jesus Christ would establish His rule and the household of God would be comprised of peoples from all nations. Herod feared this and tried to destroy the Christ child. Many of the Jews feared the loss of their power and so they crucified Jesus. The government authorities feared it and persecuted the church for not bowing to the Caesars. With Jesus seated on the throne of David, a new age unlike any other was ushered in. A spiritual Kingdom was established that could not be destroyed. And His house still rules. Every soul that turns to Jesus Christ by repenting and being Baptized into the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, is "delivered from the domain of darkness and transferred into the kingdom of His beloved Son." This is Good News, earth-shaking news!
