A NATION THAT PROSPERS

Some people think prosperity is a matter of chance or luck. But can an unrighteous, evil nation flourish? It is doubtful that anything but poverty and corruption can follow an evil nation. A nation that does not respect each man's right to worship Yahweh will not prosper. A nation that does not extol Christian virtues will not prosper. A nation that does not defend the family, the most basic of institutions, can not prosper. The Psalmist tells us that a nation is blessed that practices righteousness and follows Yahweh.
"Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD,..." (Ps. 33:12)
Blessings flow from God. He causes the sun to shine and He gives rain to the fruit bearing trees. But He also works providentially to further the labors of those who align their wills with His. The Proverb says,
"Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people." (Pro. 14:34).
All nations are not blessed equally unless they seek and practice God's righteousness. There is really nothing mystical about all of this. When a nation abandons God, the nation abandons His truths of right and wrong. Life becomes less valuable: hence murder rates and laws permitting infanticide, abortion. When a nation abandons God, the family suffers: hence we see the break up of marriages, the "cohabiting" in place of marriage, and the redefinition of what marriage is. What is happening in the United States is what happened to the Roman Empire: it crumbled from the inside. Robert Spence Watson wrote in the late 1800's concerning the inevitable fall of the Roman empire:
"The old Roman empire had fallen before the repeated attacks of the Barbarians. By the middle of the fifth century the Western Empire had ceased to exist. It had long been moribund. The true Roman people had steadily decreased in numbers. Marriage had become so exceedingly distasteful to them that it could not be otherwise. Loving ease and comfort, they dreaded the trouble of bringing up large families. They were rich and selfish." (Caedmon, The First English Poet. Robert Spence Watson. Accessed online here... (see page 2)
When a nation abandons God and ignores godly principles, corruption and degradation increases. How can a nation prosper that chooses leisure over family? It's can't. But this is what is happening with the validating of cohabition and homosexual marriage. Money lenders and investors get caught stealing or mishandling funds and honest, hard working people suffer the loss of their investments and pensions. Judges pass down lenient sentences for capital crimes and lawmakers accept bribes and while enjoying reelection. The Bible says, "Woe to those who enact evil statutes And to those who constantly record unjust decisions,..." (Isa. 10:1). Do not think that a nation can prosper that ignores God's righteousness. Not when criminals rights are defended while the good citizens are neglected and abused. These days, if a man defends himself, his family, or his property, he could find himself in serious trouble. America needs to respect the family as God ordained it: consisting of a mother and father and their biological offspring. These are serious issues.

But all is not lost if people repent and do God's will. We must not be afraid. Our sin is a disgrace, but God will exalt the nation that turns to do righteousness. We must pray for our leaders (1 Tim. 2:1ff). God desires for them to be saved and for there to be justice in the land. God desires for the name of Jesus Christ to be heard by all. A nation that prospers is a nation that acknowledges the goodness of God and seeks to do His will.

  1. A very good post. Perhaps a bit off your main point, but it makes me think of some if the complete poverty I have seen in other nations which I have visited and that exists in many places around the world. The places have completely corrupt and evil governements full of power hungry men and women who keep and take all wealth for themselves. From the highest levels and throughout these governments there is little respect for life or families, and the citizenry takes little responsilbility for their own condition.

When I see people in this country give money to end poverty it reveals their ignorance and naivete. Most of these places receive food and monetary support sufficient to end most suffering from the U.S. and to a much lesser degree from other nations. But, the aid never makes to those who need it while corrupt politicians grow richer. The root problem is not lack of money it is the presence of evil.

  2. Thank you, 1000yds.
I agree that it is the same issue being played out all over the world, and throughout all time. These nations cannot prosper if they abandon nature. If they upset the natural economy where people enjoy the fruits of their labor by accepting global warming myths or marxists utopian myths, they saddle their society with ineffective regulations and punishments. A society that robs the rich to give to the poor is robbing the goose that lays the golden egg.

God is not mocked, Whatsoever a man sows, that shall he reap. If a society sows unrighteousness, it will not prosper.
