TRUSTING - LIVING IN A SECULAR WORLD

We are made to trust. God designed us to learn trust from our very beginning. A child in the womb is influenced by the tender care of the mother carrying it. Though insulated in the womb, a mother that puts poison in her body is putting poison in the child's body through the umbilical cord. When the baby is delivered and laid on the mother's breast, it learns trust. The most innocent thing on earth with zero ability to protect itself from harm is surrounded by daddy and grandparents who take special care that little baby is passed safely from arm to loving arm. Gentle words are spoken to the child and the warmth communicates in muted tones that baby is safe.

I speak to many people in the jail system and most have been told and most understand that they have "trust issues". They are grown men who learned in their early life that they can't trust the people around them. Mother and Daddy scream and hit each other. They dump the children off so they can party or go on a weekend gambling spree. These children pull back from attachments because it's safer to go it alone. When Daddy drinks he screams and he hits. The little boy steers clear of him. Daddy can't be trusted. Mommy is so consumed with her own pursuits and lustful interests that the message slowly settles in to the child's psyche that things come before me. Eventually, the child learns to be just as untrustworthy. This cycle is vicious.

God did not mean it to be this way. Of course there's going to be evil in the world as men are under the rule of Satan, 1 Jn. 5:19. This is sin. But parents and family are supposed to be an insulation against these influences. Children should be in a safe place where they learn to trust and to be trusted. Fathers are to bring their children up to know the Lord and they are not to destroy the spirit of the children, Eph. 6:4. But with rampant ungodliness, trust is not experienced and it is not learned. So when men say they have trust issues, they don't trust anyone. It's no wonder that they don't trust God. How can this be fixed?

God fixes broken men. God is faithful. "Every word of God is tested; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him", Pro. 30:5. God and His Word is the starting place to once again trusting. Studies in the inerrancy of Scripture and in the supernatural nature of the Scriptures with it's prophecies are important for learning trust. God is faithful and true. Solomon wrote, "Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding", Pro. 3:5. When men try God and put His ways to the test, they begin to understand. The damaged soul begins to see a way out.

Learning God is trustworthy is the beginning point. Also learn that we are to be trustworthy. The building of relationships requires trust. I may not trust everyone, but some people can be trusted because they have learned this from God. When men have trust issues, they need God and they will learn the value of being trusted.

God must be trustworthy because He says to trust in Him. Since 1956, "In God we Trust" has been America's national motto. And in God we all should trust. Faith is essential to salvation. Without faith a man cannot be saved. No one will be excused on Judgment Day because he had "trust issues". God has proven Himself to be trustworthy and men are without excuse if they reject Him. "And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for He that comes to comes to God must believe that He is, and that HE is a rewarder of those who seek Him", Heb 11:6.
