TYPES OF SIN. DIFFERENCE IN SINS, for 4/10/17

In general, how is sin defined? 1 John 3:4.

Remain dead still, don't move, don't think, don't flinch, and you have just sinned?
There is the sin of omission which is NOT doing what God commanded to be fine. It's the sin of doing nothing when God said to do something. James says the one who knows the right thing to do, but does not do it, it's sin, James 4:17. Jesus points to people who won't be saved because they did stuff, but they did not do the will of the Father, My. 7:21ff.

There is also the sin of commission which is done by doing what God said not to do, Col. 3:25. The is the flip side of opposite of the sin of omission. Only those who do God's will will be saved.
Romans 1; Galatians 5:19-21; 1 Cor. 6:9-11

The natural and good becomes something not so good? Have you ever heard of the good becoming the enemy of best? Examples?

Hab. 3 has the prophet supposing the loss of many good things. "17Though the fig tree should not blossom And there be no fruit on the vines, Though the yield of the olive should fail And the fields produce no food,Though the flock should be cut off from the fold And there be no cattle in the stalls,
18Yet I will exult in the LORD, I will rejoice in the God of my salvation.
" Hab 3:17-18.

What's the point? You are poor of you only have the gift of oils and cattle but don't have the Giver. Don't get distracted in life so that blessings become your curses.

Besides these two broad definitions for sin, omission and commission, there is this category of sin which entails doing something that's not evil in and of itself, not intrinsically evil or wrong, yet it is good that causes the separation from the best. Some of man's natural appetites or needs have limitations or healthy boundaries. If we are not guided spiritually and well grounded, we can be driven by the flesh to go too excess. The sexual drive is God's design. But there are boundaries to satisfy it in marriage, 1 Cor. 7:1ff. So to love of family or escape in recreation is not bad, but is are good, unless or until it becomes excessive and out of control.

When work becomes the pursuit of riches, you crossed the line by making good into evil, Lk 12:20.
When love of children become loving people more than God, you crossed the line, Mt 10:37.
When needed sleep turns into laziness, the line is crossed, Pro. 24:33.

Cars and things are not in and of themselves evil. But they often are treated as god. Something that's even a blessing when crossing this line becomes a curse. Our various appetites can become inordinate and spiritually unhealthy even to sin. When these become sin, we need to repent and exercise these things with healthy control.

And sometimes we simply don't know our own sin. Let's pray that God helps us to see when we have any bad habits that hinder our walk with Him, Psalm 139:24.
